Google Business Profile: The Free Tool Every Barn Owner Should Use

Learn how to set up and optimize your Google Business Profile to get found by local clients searching for riding lessons and boarding.

Trainer Solutions ·

When someone searches “riding lessons near me” or “horse boarding [your town],” Google shows a map with local businesses. If your barn isn’t on that map, you’re missing out on free visibility.

The good news? Getting listed is free and takes about 30 minutes to set up.

What Is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free listing that appears in Google Search and Google Maps. It shows your:

  • Business name and address
  • Phone number and website
  • Hours of operation
  • Photos
  • Reviews from clients

When someone searches for equestrian services in your area, a complete Google Business Profile helps you appear in those “Local Pack” results—the map and business listings at the top of the search page.

Why It Matters for Barns

Horse people are local people. They’re not going to drive two hours for weekly lessons. They’re searching for services near them, and Google is how they find you.

A strong Google Business Profile:

  • Puts your barn on the map—literally
  • Shows photos of your facility before they even visit your website
  • Lets happy clients leave reviews that build trust
  • Provides quick access to your phone number, directions, and hours

How to Set It Up

  1. Go to business.google.com
  2. Sign in with a Google account (create one if needed)
  3. Search for your business to see if a listing already exists
  4. Claim or create your listing
  5. Verify your business (usually by postcard, phone, or email)

Verification can take a few days, but once complete, you have full control over your listing.

Optimizing Your Profile

Once verified, fill out every field:

  • Business name: Use your actual barn name, not keywords
  • Category: Choose “Horse Riding School,” “Horse Boarding Service,” or the closest match
  • Address: Your physical location (or service area if you travel)
  • Hours: When people can visit or reach you
  • Phone: A number you actually answer
  • Website: Link to your website
  • Description: A brief overview of your services
  • Photos: Add at least 10-15 high-quality photos

Getting Reviews

Reviews are powerful. A barn with twenty 5-star reviews looks more trustworthy than one with none.

Ask happy clients to leave a review. Make it easy by sending them a direct link to your review page. You can find this link in your Google Business Profile dashboard.

Tip: Respond to every review—good or bad. It shows you’re engaged and care about client feedback.

Keep It Updated

Your Google Business Profile isn’t “set it and forget it.” Update it when:

  • Your hours change (holidays, seasonal schedules)
  • You add new services
  • You get new photos
  • You move or change contact info

Regular updates signal to Google that your business is active, which can help your ranking.
